For parents in the NICU, bringing in the car seat for the hospital staff to inspect means you’re about to leave. It’s a rite of passage: you’ve graduated from the hospital and are about to set out into the world. Erica and I love seeing parents on our floor bring in their car seats. I always give them the Jeremiah Johnson nod - Well done, you made it, you’re out of here my friends. Can’t wait for our turn.

We’re close. Mercy is doing great. She’s smiling, social, and up to full feeds. Her weight gain has stalled the last few days, but we’re hoping that as her body adjusts to the increased volume she’ll gain weight more consistently. And once doctors are convinced she’s gaining enough, they’ll ask to see our car seat.

Erica and I, however, are ready to have her home, and we’re not just going to sit back and wait for doctors to eventually ask about the car seat. We’ve decided to embark on a stealth initiative to convince the doctors that they really, really want to see our car seat, and they want to see it right now.

We have some great ideas already. We’ve considered surreptitiously placing reminders of car seats all over our hospital room. We might bring in a doll-sized car seat and fill it with candy to create positive associations with car seats and Mercy’s room.

For a next-level campaign, we could create a viral YouTube sensation titled, “Do You Want To See My Car Seat?” - set to the hit Disney song, “Do You Want To Build A Snowman?” - and then somehow ensure our doctors get a link.

If you out there have additional ideas for our great Car Seat Initiative, let me know in the comments. I’ll keep everyone posted on how our campaign progresses. Until then, please pray that she gains consistently, her eyes heal completely, and that we manage to join the ranks of the inspected.

We’re praying it happens this week.

Mercy knows her car seat is awesome

I googled “car seat brochure” and found plenty of handouts in pdf ready to print. You could subliminally spam them with a new brochure mixed into the nurse’s station every few days.

From Jessica:

Make foot booties that look like car seats.

Doctor up a paper cup coffee mug / cup wrap to look like a car seat.

Print on a tee shirt for her:

Either Packing Instructions or Shipping Instructions :1- Take One infant

2 -strap into car seat

3- fasten in middle van seat facing to back

4- drive home

The put an Expedited Parcel or Shipping in red across the top or center

Or put it on a cheap baby wrap

Or write out Scripture for today from the Book of Exodus “scripture” prominently placed saying “ and God told him/ (her )to raise up the Staff and the doors were parted and the child(ren) were able to pass…

Erica could switcher her purse out for a car seat and carry it everywhere, or she could get a pattern for sewing a car seat cover, and work on it - telling everyone she sees what she's making.

Or... Order some custom fabric printed all over with car seats, and then make matching outfits out of it that you wear into the NICU every day!
